Brief information on the project

PROMISCES will identify how industrial pollution prevents the circular economy (CE) deployment in the EU and which strategies help overcome critical bottlenecks to deliver the European Green Deal and Circular Economic Action Plan's ambitions. 27 Partners from 9 European countries are involved in this project.

To reach its goals, PROMISCES will:

  1. Develop new analytical methods and toxicological tools to provide data on persistent, mobile (PM) substances in complex environmental matrices
  2. Explore sources and environmental pathways of PM substances into relevant environmental compartments
  3. Assess fate and transport pathways within the different CE routes and evaluate the impacts of corrective measures
  4. Improve the assessment and management of human health risks from drinking water and agricultural products
  5. Develop and demonstrate cost-efficient and sustainable technologies for the removal of PM substances from different media
  6. Translate PROMISCES results into guidance for efficient and feasible management of PM substances and recommendations for the implementation of relevant EU policy strategies and directives
  7. Integrate the results into a decision support framework which considers resource recovery and water reuse and supports chemical management decisions.

TU Wien will specifically contribute to the project through a large catchment scale case study in the Danube basin semi-closed water cycle, down to Budapest (Hungary). Our works includes:

  1. Implementing a high analytical sensitive TOP assay methods for assessing organic fluorinated compounds in waste, surface, ground- and drinking waters
  2. Monitoring and experiments for PM fate & transport during bank filtration
  3. Innovation of predictive fate&transport models for PMs in the environment
  4. Providing guidance for the fate&transport modelling of PMs.

PROMISCES will develop key technologies and innovations to monitor, prevent and remediate PM pollutions in the soil-sediment-water system. Successfully implementation of PROMISCES is expected to contribute significantly to helping meet the European Green Deal goals for a safer and more sustainable environment.
